Radiofrequency ablation/rhizotomy for knee/hip joints

Radiofrequency ablation (sometimes incorrectly referred to as rhizotomy) is a minimally invasive procedure used to reduce pain in different areas of the body by disrupting nerve signals. Radiofrequency ablation for joint pain is a procedure that targets the nerves that are transmitting pain signals from the joints to the brain. The procedure involves using radiofrequency energy to disrupt pain signals sent by nerves around the affected joint. This procedure can be effective for treating chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis of different joints. Radiofrequency ablation is often used to treat back pain, specifically due to facet joint arthritis or whiplash injury. In recent years, the procedure has been used for knee, hip, and shoulder joint pain. This treatment is often used for chronic knee or hip pain that has not responded to other treatments, such as medication, physical therapy, or injections. Very often, it can be used for patients that do not want or cannot have surgery. Lighthouse Spine Center has a team of experienced physicians who specialize in performing these procedures with precision and care to ensure optimal results for our patients. It can provide long-lasting relief from pain and improve mobility and quality of life for patients who have not found relief from other treatments.

Procedure Process

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that is typically performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia to numb the area being treated around the affected knee or hip joint. Fluoroscopy (X-ray) or ultrasound is used to guide a needle into the affected area, near the nerves that carry pain sensation for the specific joint. Once the needle is in the correct position, a small amount of electric current is passed through the needle to create a lesion on the nerves that transmit pain signals. The lesion will disrupt the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals and will provide relief. The procedure typically takes about 30-60 minutes to perform, and patients can go home the same day.

Recovery

Patients can expect a relatively easy recovery process after radiofrequency ablation. Some patients may experience some soreness, discomfort, or swelling at the site of the procedure, but this typically resolves within a few days. Patients may be advised to apply ice to the affected area and take over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any discomfort. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several days after the procedure, but most can resume normal activities within a week. It's important for patients to follow their doctor's instructions regarding physical therapy or other rehabilitation exercises to optimize their recovery. Some potential side effects of radiofrequency ablation include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, temporary numbness of the skin, or allergic reactions to anesthesia, but these are rare. Patients should contact their doctor immediately if they experience any concerning symptoms after the procedure.

Benefits

Radiofrequency ablation is an effective treatment for chronic knee and hip joint pain, offering several benefits over more invasive options such as surgery. One of the primary benefits is long-lasting pain relief, which can last for several months or even years after the procedure. For patients unable to undergo surgery, this might be the only option to relieve pain. Radiofrequency ablation can also improve mobility and function, allowing patients to return to their normal activities and enjoy a better quality of life. Additionally, these procedures are minimally invasive, meaning that they typically involve minimal pain, scarring, or downtime. Radiofrequency ablation offers a safe and effective way to manage chronic knee and hip joint pain, providing patients with a viable alternative to more invasive or less effective treatments.

Consultation and Preparation

At the Lighthouse Spine Centre, an initial consultation will allow our specialists to review the patient’s medical history, perform a physical examination, and discuss their symptoms and treatment goals before performing radiofrequency ablation. Patients will also be asked to provide any relevant medical records, imaging studies, or laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis and planning of their treatment. Based on this information, we will determine whether radiofrequency ablation is an appropriate treatment option and explain the procedure, risks, and benefits in detail. In most cases, diagnostic injections need to be done before performing radiofrequency ablation. Patients will also receive pre-procedure instructions, which may include avoiding certain medications, fasting for a specific period of time, or arranging transportation after the procedure. Patients are encouraged to ask any questions they may have during the consultation and to communicate any concerns. This consultation process is designed to ensure that patients are fully informed and prepared for the procedure and that their individual needs and goals are taken into account.
